Dear Friend,
My name is Nan McAdam and I have something to share with you.
On a bright August afternoon, 15 years ago, my Dad had his first heart attack. This marked the beginning of my sometimes-stressful-sometimes-joyful odyssey into elder care.
Little did I know, on that hot August day, I would be starting a new chapter in my life. I was naive. I didn’t know the first thing about taking care of anyone in the winter of their lives. Their needs are drastically different than any of those I had experienced before. I never imagined, at the time, I would need to help 5 of my most cherished elders through their old age. Each of them with their own unique challenges.
I was unprepared for many things….
The role reversal, which took place with my parents, took me by surprise. They needed my help more with day to day things. It seemed we had changed places in our roles of parent and child. You know what I mean….keeping them safe in their home, helping them when they fall, helping with financial decisions, along with an assortment of other needs.
Dad’s health continued to deteriorate, and he started showing signs of dementia. It seemed like all the information I could put my hands on was written by well meaning professionals. They would explain the clinical side of dementia, but not the helpful “how tos” I desperately needed to care for him.
I felt confused about where to go. The world of elder care is huge!
There’s a lot of information out there, scattered across cyberspace and beyond. I was desperately in need of real life examples and explanations. I needed to know I wasn’t the only one who got confused, overwhelmed, or depressed. I was looking for something, or someone, to show me how to refill my emotional cup so I could continue to cope with my aging loved ones changing needs.
There are many aspects of care-giving that are demanding. When my parents needed so much to be done for them and I had many other things and people counting on me, too. I was overwhelmed. How could I continue to care for them, and do everything I needed to do in my “regular life” and not go into stress overload? I needed to find things to save my sanity and decrease my stress levels.
All the information was so spread out and not readily available. I got very good at ferreting out information and sources other people don’t even know exists! I found all the “how tos” in all sorts of different places and people. I found services which benefited them and took over some of the time consuming or stressful care-giving responsibilities. I discovered ways to balance my care-giving responsibilities with my career and family.
Dealing with their important documents and their finances!
I didn’t realize in the beginning of my elder care responsibilities, I would eventually have to deal with their important documents and finances. This information was important to providing different services and help for them.
Another road to be explored! What documents did I need? Where were they located? I wished I could find a place where it would list all the documents I needed to have. A place where I could find the legal and financial aspects which were needed to continue their life’s journey.
Are You Getting Your Degree in the School of Hard Knocks?
To be honest with you, I found myself enrolled in the “School of Hard Knocks”. I had to learn so many things by experience. I tried things which didn’t work, which led me to the things that did work. Experience can be a hard task master, but an effective teacher.
I have always enjoyed helping others. I decided I could help others, going through similar situations, with my expansive knowledge. What better way to help others traverse the minefield of elder care than by writing a book about my experiences and providing helpful real life “how tos”?
I would love to share these “how tos” with you! You could have an easier time on your journey of caring for your beloved aging senior citizen. That would be a win-win for both of us!
I don’t claim to know everything. That would be silly! Our aging loved ones are individuals and as different as one snowflake is from another. Each of the 5 elders I cared for were drastically different. They’d all had different life experiences and illnesses. They couldn’t help but age differently.
The information I provide is not only resources you can access, but also real life, practical, common sense information, from hands on experience, not clinical studies, all in one place!

Testimonial from a reader:
“I just finished reading your e book. Honestly, I have been noticing changes in my parents and am scared about what may be around the corner for them, me and my family. I hear my friends telling horror stories about their parents and know it won’t be long before I am caught in the emotion and confusion of that time.
There is a lot of information in your e book, it is well researched and most important, you have been through the very thing you write about.
The workbook at the end helped me to single out and address specific concerns I have, and will have. It helps to face the future with the information you have provided. I can put the fear on hold and look objectively at my parents in making decisions on how and when to help them. Thank you for writing this book.”
